Vancouver Island

The following picture shows one of the two small aeroplanes, which brought us directly to Tofino. And also from rain in the Rockies, to sunshine and reasonable temperatures. But only for one day!

We stayed at is the Wickaninnish Inn which was built very close to the sea, providing spectacular views especially from the bathrooms.

A march on the beach after arrival. After a day in Bus and Plane, the ocean breeze and the beach brought back the good mood, to enjoy the dinner on a whole.

Whale watching.
There are not many pictures from our whale watching day worth being published on the web page. The weather conditions and the technique of the cameras produced whale pictures only suitable for insiders. You have to pinpoint in a sea of grey the place, to tell „there was the whale“. If any one has some pictures of better quality, please sent it to me. The picture below is the zodiac we used. The picture was taken back on the main boat, when a small group of hard boiled zodiac fans left for the trip home to Tofino.

Mears Island:
The next day the weather was slightly more friendly, however Bill re-arranged the schedule of the day. The complete group visited Mears Island, and the afternoon was allocated to the Houseboat in the Clayaquot.
The following pictures are taken on Mears Island. We reached Mears island by means of some Zodiacs, and entered the islands cedar wood tracks. The beauty of the island is difficult to catch by taking photos, (at least for me), but some yielded better than expected. The Artist and Biologist Mark Hobson was our guide on Mears Island, and presented the island with infecting enthusiasm. As artist and biologist he has a very special capability to pick up the views. He lives on a houseboat, and his drawings were also present in our Hotel. If you have more interest on Mark Hobson, visit his homepage www.markhobson.com.

The following picture shows the track we used on the Island. The rain made the track quite slippery, and asked for full attention whilst walking. But on each stop the view was quite impressing.

After a nice lunch on the houseboat, we got the opportunity to get trips with float planes. The picture below shows the smaller one of the planes. Sabine and I had the pleasure to be the passengers of this one, accompanied by Hong.

The other floatplane accelerates for takeoff, whilst our plane is taxiing to the other end of the bay.

Sea lions on the rock. To enable the photo shooting, the pilot turned quite sharply over the island. The photo may need a 90 degree turn, but the angle out of plane was curious enough, that it is hard to determine what position is best.

Back at the houseboat I took the last pictures, having a marvelous sunset. The following picture is collage of a series of pictures taken from the Clayoqout Sound. The colours vary of the scenery due to the different lighting of the pictures. However, it gives a better view of the sound.

The last picture is a shot later, between starter and maincourse. Again the clouds and the light formed an interesting scenery.
